Nate co-developed a new business process for aligning cross-functional teams to the same priorities each quarter. He then developed and facilitated a process to assess resource requirements, timing, and dependencies. The human-centered design process led to relabeling of the picking floor (improving accuracy and speed), an audit team (helping picking and replenishment improve performance), and investment in additional replenishment cranes (increasing throughput of the entire system).

Nate facilitated the organization's executive team to collaboratively create an eco-system to empower localized innovation for bedside nurses. He led a team of facilitators who engaged nurses and nursing leadership in rapid human-centered solution design.
The solutions helped relieve large-scale financial and operational pressure across 5,000 bedside nurses following COVID. Nate's facilitative approach boosted morale of nursing team through listening, coaching, and empowerment.

Informed by his diversity & inclusion training from Mindgym, The Kaleidoscope Group, and Catalyst, Nate facilitated executives through human-centered design process to build their first diversity & inclusion strategy
He started by inviting executives to "lightning listening" sessions with associates to ensure appropriate understanding of problems to solve.
He supported executives through their own diversity & inclusion journey while helping them develop of strategic plan. Nate then trained and guided facilitators within the physician group to lead 3 cross-functional initiative teams.

Nate facilitated a multi-tiered initiative focused on improving capture of referrals within a physician group with over 700 providers.
Work sessions started with direct learning and observation with patients and providers. This input, along with business performance data, shaped the problems to solve and the innovations adopted.

JUSTICE VAULT, COLUMBUS, OHIO
OUTCOME: $175K awarded to three innovators committed to creating anti-racists systems.
As a co-founder of Justice Vault, Nate and his partners used human centered design to engage innovators in designing a pitch event focused on anti-racist innovation. The process began with direct conversations with racial justice innovators whose work was at various stages of maturity. Nate and the Justice Vault team also included in the design process local organizations like the Columbus Urban League, the Equity Now Coalition, Impact Community Action, Columbus Black, the United Way of Central Ohio, Can't Stop Columbus, and Accenture.
The result of this collaborative, human-centered design process was a pitch event unlike any other with a focus on equitable access to funding and community engagement.

OUTCOME: Fifty physicians earned Clinical Medical Education (CME) credits and are capable of using human-centered design for problem-solving.
Nate trained several cohorts of physicians through a hands-on design thinking workshop. As a result of Nate's documented design thinking expertise, participating providers earned Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit for the session.
After a brief lecture on design thinking's value and process, Nate coached participants through a rapid hands-on design process to tackle the issue of physician burnout.

The cross-functional teams Nate trained became the backbone of innovation at the organization, spreading design thinking best practices with every new initiative. The co-creation approach he taught regularly unlocks creative solutions by bringing more diverse perspectives into solution design.

After completing gender equity training from Catalyst, Nate used a hands-on training approach to bring fellow graduates together to solve gender equity challenges.
Starting with understanding each gender's experience, participants built practical solutions directly aimed at improving gender equity.
Participants left with a sense of traction on real issues and confidence using design thinking to solve additional problems.

Nate tailored 30-90 minute design thinking education sessions to internal departments at the request of their executive leaders.
He demonstrated the practical business benefits of human centered design and walked participants through the process using real-world examples from within the organization. Numerous participants later engaged Nate to coach them through design thinking initiatives to solve complex challenges.

KENYON COLLEGE, GAMBIER, OHIO
OUTCOME: Capstone students capable of applying design thinking to complex problems.
Nate designed and facilitated a 1-day hands-on design thinking training for upperclassmen at Kenyon College. OhioHealth invited students on site to learn about problems facing healthcare and learn design thinking through a mini design sprint.
Students learned design thinking tools by tackling participant-selected challenges like universal health coverage, infant mortality, and gender affirmation surgery. Participants left with an appreciation of how structured design process can help solve highly-complex real world challenges.
